Resources for Advisors

Composition Requirement
Fall Advising Assistance

General Information:
The English Department assists advisors in finding the most appropriate composition classes for incoming freshmen and transfer students. The summer SOAR recommendations are sent to advisors through Dean Zern's office, and students are scheduled during SOAR sessions. If an advisor changes a student's SOAR placement, please be sure that the student is moved to an equivalent class.

Fall Composition Classes

Standard Classes

English 132-(sections 02 through 39)
Most incoming freshmen will have a simple Engl 132 recommendation (without any additional section numbers, etc.)  If advisors move students within these sections, they will be making an equivalent change.

Engl 133-01 and -02
We offer one or two general sections of Engl 133 in the fall for students who took Engl 132 in the spring and completed the course with a grade in the C range.

Sections that Require Specific Recommendations

Engl 130-01 linked with LA 175
This is the first of our basic level two-semester English courses.  These students will take Engl 131 in the spring and (upon successful completion of Engl 131) will take Engl 133-01 the following fall.  Students may not move directly from Engl 130 to Engl 133.

Engl 132-01 linked with LA 250-01
This is a special section designed for non-native speakers of English and Bilingual students who require extra help with English language acquisition.

LA 150 and 151- sections 01 through 04
These one-credit courses are designed for composition students who require extra assistance with writing, the writing process, grammar, and mechanics.  Students take LA 150 concurrently with Engl 132 and LA 151 concurrently with Engl 133.
