Welcome to the Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development!
Student Activities has been an integral element of Student Life since the mid 1970s. With a modest list of organizations reflecting the political and social times of the '70s, our list of Clubs and Organizations has grown to over 60 clubs and organizations and reflects the current interests of our students. Student Activities and Leadership Development play an important role in the daily lives of our students. We encourage you to use your energy and creativity to contribute to the diverse assortment of things to do on campus. The experienced staff in the office believes in our students’ personal growth and education outside of the classroom. The staff’s dedication to the betterment of Student Life represents years in the field and at the College and our doors are open and ready for you to step into the experience and immerse yourself into Student Life!
Students become involved in Student Activities usually within the first two weeks they are here as First Year or Transfer Students. The Student Activities and Involvement Expo hosted by the Office offers students an opportunity to meet the student leaders of each organization and also see what they are planning for the year.
- Annual Traditions on campus include, WNECpalooza Music Fest, Homecoming, Midnight Madness, Family and Friends Weekend, October’s Freak Week, Winter Week and Spring Week including the Spring Event.
- Departmental clubs will usually host monthly lunchtime programs and meetings featuring speakers or off campus field trips to related career sites. Special Interests Clubs range from Amnesty International to the Role Playing group named W.A.R.P. and include our student groups performing in the Arts area, Campus Chorus, Concert Band and the Stageless Players (drama club), one of the oldest clubs on campus.
- Most programming is brought to campus by the Campus Activities Board, the largest subcommittee of Student Senate. Student Senate funds most of the clubs on campus through the annual Student Activities Fee and Class Councils are charged with programming that is not only social but includes community outreach and educational opportunities for their classmates as well.
- Student Media is an extension of classroom theory and students are encouraged to participate in The Westerner (newspaper), The Cupola (yearbook), WNEK-FM, (10 watts non commercial radio station) and The Review of Art and Literature (annual literary magazine).
Programming on campus is a seven-day operation and reflects the office’s commitment to weekend programming through the weekly FRIDAYS events starting at 9:00 p.m. followed by “Late Night at the Rock” events that starts at 11:00 p.m. and continues to 2:00 a.m. in the Campus Center on Fridays and Saturdays. The Food Court is also opened for business during these hours as well. Weekends also include trips and recreational programs throughout the Northeast region.
The Leadership Development element of the office is built on developing the potential and talents of our students and begins with the Emerging Leader Leadership Series, followed by the Art of Leadership for Sophomores to the Junior LEADS Conference and the capstone experience of the year long Senior Success Series. Most of the student leaders on campus are involved in many of the other leadership training programs offered by the Office emphasizing the importance of community, personal development, civic responsibility and an appreciation for diversity.
Sincerely,
Maureen Hart Keizer
