Williams explored the country’s decade-long process of democratization, the opening of its economy to external market forces, and the resurgence of Islam during his lecture. He also discussed the emergence of the Republic of Turkey 90 years ago from fragments of the Ottoman Empire and the complex cultural forces that have threatened to pull the country apart.

The next speaker in the Athenaeum Series will be Assistant Professor of Psychology, Jason Seacat. On October 22 at 4:00 p.m. in room 319 of the D'Amour Library, Seacat will present a lecture titled “Social Stigma, Stereotypes and Health Behavior."
