Students Learn the Role of Engineers in Policy Development
Posted October 17, 2009
The School of Engineering and D’Amour Library sponsored a lecture by Allen Baer, president of the Solar Quest Education Foundation, as part of the School of Engineering’s Symposia Series on October 6. Baer's lecture, "Renewable Energy in the Galapagos Islands: The Role of the Engineer in Policy Development," was centered around the environmental crisis that he feels will be imminent if things don't change soon.

“Unless 20 percent of the total global education workforce is not focused on climate mitigation, we won’t make it. I fully believe the investment and structure of the world community is very misplaced into business as usual and protecting corporate interests and protecting the economy that we have. We need a new economy, and a new source of power, and a new paradigm for energy and you folks need to take charge of that,” said Baer. He encouraged the audience to make a change by saying “you the students, and with the leadership of your faculty, can make a huge difference in impacting the future of this planet. By applying the knowledge you have in the engineering program and applying a cross disciplinary information to form the design criteria for your solution, you can have a major impact on the world.”
