Imagine, for a moment, the excitement of scaling a rock-covered ledge, the freedom of flying through treetops on a zip line, and sitting around a campfire in peaceful contemplation!  Picture yourself working with local children, planning social events for the elderly or serving food at a local shelter.  As you anticipate coming to summer orientation (SOAR), we also invite you to explore BEAR TRACKS.

BEAR TRACKS is an innovative program at Western New England College that is designed especially for first time, first year students.  The transition to college can be a confusing and challenging time and while summer orientation and the fall Transitions program help to develop a foundation, BEAR TRACKS is a special addition that constructs a solid support system of peers and not only helps to establish an identity in the community but also promotes confidence and self-assurance in the academic adventure at Western New England College.  BEAR TRACKS allows students to participate in one of two options, an Outdoor Adventure option or an Urban Plunge option.  Both options, which are led by upper-class students, allow for self-discovery and reflection on the possibilities for your future.  Outdoor Adventure affords students the opportunity to participate with their peers in a series of team building and self-exploration activities in the great outdoors of the Becket-Chimney Corners YMCA Camp and Outdoor Center in Becket, MA.  Urban Plunge affords students the opportunity to participate in service projects with their peers that will impact residents of the greater Springfield area.  Students will have the opportunity to explore all that the community has to offer while connecting with their peers.  Participants will be guided by experienced staff and upper-class student leaders through a three day program that culminates in an opportunity to share the experience with family and friends.

Enclosed is an application and brochure about BEAR TRACKS.  As you glance at the pictures, see yourself there.  Most of all, don’t delay in submitting your application and deposit payment, as space is limited to no more than 48 students.  Note the application deadline of July 15th.  All participants will be notified as applications are reviewed so the earlier you apply, the earlier you can confirm your place.  Note that if you are intending to participate in any fall varsity sport or if you are attending band camp or ROTC training, you are not able to apply to BEAR TRACKS due to conflict with pre-season training and related activities.

Please direct any questions to the Office of Freshman and Transfer Students at (413) 782-1312. We look forward to guiding you on your academic journey.  It is a decision you will never regret.
