About Alpha Lambda Delta
PURPOSE
Alpha Lambda Delta is a national honor society for men and women which honors and encourages commendable academic achievement during the first year of college. Its purpose is to promote not only intelligent living, but also a high standard of integrity. It further encourages students in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their unique roles in society.
MEMBERSHIP
Alpha Lambda Delta recognizes students who have achieved academic distinction during their freshman year. Acceptance is based on attaining a minimum grade point average of 3.50 in the first semester of study or a 3.50 cumulative average at the end of the freshman year.
HISTORY
Alpha Lambda Delta was founded at the University of Illinois in 1924. Originally chartered as an honor society for women, chapters were soon organized at Purdue University and DePauw University. In 1975, the charter was amended so that men and women could be recognized. There are now 215 chapters of Alpha Lambda Delta across the country. Alpha Lambda Delta was originally conceived at Western New England College in 1986 as Lambda Delta and continued until 1991 when national affiliation was attained.
