Areas of Interest
Early intensive behavioral intervention for children with autism
My specific interests in this area include the development and validation of clinical decision making models, assessment of variables influencing clinical and educational decisions, experimental evaluation of behavioral teaching strategies, staff training, and assessment of variables influencing treatment effectiveness and procedural fidelity.
Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior
I am interested in the application of Skinner's taxonomy to our understanding of language development and the assessment and treatment of language delays.
Assessment and treatment of automatically reinforced problem behaviors
My interests in this area are primarily related to the generalization and maintenance of treatment outcomes associated with response interruption and redirection, reinforcement of adaptive competing responses, self-monitoring, and manipulations of stimulus control.

Additional Information
Thank you for visiting my website. I joined the faculty at Western New England College in September 2008. I teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses including Childhood Disorders and Treatments, Applied Behavior Analysis, Language Research Practicum, and Early Intensive Behavioral Intervention. In addition, I advise and collaborate on research with two students in the Doctoral Program in Behavior Analysis. For Prospective Ph.D. Students: I am interested in recruiting students who a) are committed to pursuing academic or applied careers using the science of behavior to improve quality of life for individuals diagnosed with developmental disabilities and b) who share some of my specific research interests. My approach as an advisor is to support and otherwise treat students as junior colleagues and collaborators. Students in my lab will have opportunities to design and execute original research, to develop skills as performance managers, and to teach effectively with a variety of populations (e.g., young children, parents, staff, college students). Please contact me (akarsten@wnec.edu) for more information about current openings in our lab and the application process. For Families and Professionals: If you have questions regarding specific research opportunities or an upcoming event in the WNEC Psychology Outreach Series, please contact me via phone or e-mail (see pertinent information, above).
