COMMUNITY RECYCLING UPDATE

A new semester has begun at the College and therefore a good opportunity to remind everyone of the recycling programs that the College has in place and how you can help in our efforts to keep our planet green.  Please visit the other recycling links (on the lower left) under campus recycling to find out additional information as to exactly what we recycle.

Within individual College offices blue recycle bins have been placed to accept mixed paper for recycling.  This includes paper of any color as well as envelopes, newspapers, copy paper, and carbon less forms.  No brown paper bags, slick paper, carbon paper, tissues, napkins, paper towels, paper cups, food wrappings, hard cover books or waxed papers should be deposited in the recycling containers. Cardboard may be placed next to these bins and our housekeeping staff will collect the cardboard along with the paper.  Cardboard includes brown corrugated cardboard and the thinner, usually gray cardboard know as “boxboard.”  Large mixed paper recycling bins have been placed outside the Campus Center mail room for students to recycle any mail that they do not want.

Ink jet and laser jet cartridges are recycled on campus.   For the administrative staff, please send these items to me at Facilities Management.  Collection centers for student cartridges are located in each residence hall.  Ask your RM/RA for locations.

Mixed paper, bottle and can recycling is provided to students within the residence halls at the request of their RM/RA staff and proceeds from the returnable bottles and cans may be used for floor or building programs of their choice. Within other buildings our housekeeping staff handles bottles and cans, but clubs or organizations can set up collections of bottles and cans for various fundraising efforts, by speaking directly with Facilities Management.

This is our eighth year of collecting used cell telephones for the benefit of domestic violence victims.  If you have an obsolete cell telephone that you would like to donate please drop it off to me at Facilities Management.  To date we have sent in over 522 cell telephones to the national Wireless Foundation’s “Call To Protect” Donate a Phone program.  Phones that are still viable are given to domestic violence victims and in some cases is their only lifeline for obtaining help.

College wide, Facilities Management staff is also involved with recycling many other College items such as:

Fluorescent Light bulbs
Electronics: old telephones, pagers, typewriters, computers
Motor Oil
Tires
Construction debris
Rechargeable batteries
Wooden shipping pallets
Hazardous waste (Laboratory Chemicals)
Tree brush for wood chips

I should note that the above list of recyclable items continues to expand as opportunities arise.  Some summer 2009 examples of this include the recycling of 16,629 square feet of ceiling tiles replaced during building upgrades and the recycling of over 17 tons (over 34,000 pounds) of surplus goods donated to the Institutional Recycling Network.

The recycling committee continues to discuss ways to expand our campus recycling program on campus, so visit our web links for details and for how you can become more involved.

Thank you for your help in our recycling program.
