Definition of Terms
Particularly Hazardous Substance (PHS): This chemical is identified as a Particularly Hazardous Substance in 29 CFR 1910.1450, Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories. The current Western New England College Chemical Hygiene Plan requires that any experiment involving PHS, by more than a single individual designing experiment or conducting a demonstration, have addtional considerations in the experiment design and instructions.

Acutely Hazardous Waste (AHW): This chemical is listed as an Acutely Hazardous Waste in 310 CMR 30.136, the hazardous waste regulations. These chemicals are banned from campus. If one of these chemicals is encountered as part of kit or mixture, contact the E&SC office for clarification of this prohabition.

Label Maker/Label Information:  If this link is live, it will move you to label content based on the Globally Harmonized System  of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).  The text of these labels are the "Risk Phrases" assgned to most common chemicals by the International Occupational Safety and Health Information Center (CIS).

ICSC: International Chemical Safety Cards from the International Programme on Chemical Safety. This international collaborative effort contains scientific and regulatory information for each chemical including the labeling standard used by Western New England College.

NIOSH: The NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazardous (NPG) fromm The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), a division of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. A source of general information on several hundred chemicals/classes in tabular form. Physical characturistics and incompatibilities are included. The NPG also identifies pertinent exposure limits and the industrial hygiene test method for determining exposure.

LCSS: The 88 Labaratory Chemical Saftey Summaries (LCSSs) prepared by the National Research Council, Committee for its publication; Prudent Practices for Handling, Storage, and Disposal of Chemicals in Labratories. These summaries were developed specifically for laboratory procedures.

RTECS: Created by NIOSH as a requirement of the original OSH ACT, this database, as it's 2001 update, contains toxicological data for 152, 927 chemicals. It is a compendium of data extracted from scientific literature. Six types of toxicity data are included in the file: (1) primary irritation; (2) mutagenic effects; (3) reproductive effects; (4) tumorigenic effects; (5) acute toxicity; and (6) other multiple dose toxicity. Specific numeric toxicity values as LD50 and LC50 are noted as well as species studied and route of administration used. For each citation, the bibliographic source is listed thereby enabling the user to access the actual studies cited.
