The primary means of hazard communication is with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) prepared by the manufacturer and sent to the College with the first shipment of a product. Some locally purchased chemicals may require an employee to ask the store for a MSDS. Many large national retailers may give you a toll free number which will automatically FAX the document. It is very important that the MSDS or a copy be forwarded to the Environmental & Safety Compliance Manger at the CUB. Maintaining a central file will allow them to be added to an electronic binder (called an "eBinder") which will make the MSDS accessible through any computer terminal on campus. It also allows the use of an electronic updating service and the generation of a chemical list in emergency situations. Perhaps most importantly, the eBinder gives critical information to Health Services or local medical facilities at the touch of a button.
The College's eBinder is accessible from the Blue MSDS On-Line Button on the Home Page of the E&SC website. Anyone can search this file by chemical name or manufacturer's name. The tab labeled "Campus Location" will lead to a list of all MSDS for a building and department. To help you find or understand a MSDS, several other resources are included in this section. These resources are also available directly from the MSDS On-Line eBinder screen under the tab "References".
