On November 17, the School of Engineering hosted its annual Solar Car Race. In addition to solar cars, two student groups created biodiesel vehicles. These vehicles use a biodiesel fuel that is processed using the waste cooking oil generated by the College's food services. This waste oil, which was previously discarded, became useful as it powered the vehicles and will in the future be used in a number of other applications around campus.

Both the solar car projects and biodiesel vehicles demonstrated a collaborative effort as teams of computer, electrical, and mechanical engineers worked together over the span of eight weeks to create their final product.

The Student Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) held its first "Pumpkin Smashing" competition on October 27. Teams of Mechanical Engineering students designed and built mechanical pumpkin smashers which they then tested to determine the most destructive device. The various tools used included drop hammers, falling sledge hammers, spring loaded swing arms, and a catapult.
