Every Western New England College Campus Police Officer is certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and First Responder to ensure that prompt and capable medical attention is always available to the campus community. The Department of Public Safety has committed itself to providing an expanded medical response capability by having some of the Campus Police Officers certified as Emergency Medical Technicians.  EMTs Currently on staff are:

  • Lt. Michael Purcell

  • Off. Eugene Maheu

  • Off. Nicholas Matthess

  • Off. James Trasatti

  • Off. Todd Mongeon

  • Off. Aaron Babinski

The Emergency Medical Technician course is a long and demanding one. In order to successfully complete the 120 hour course, each officer must pass "hands on" practical exercises, attend guest lectures, observe 10 hours of emergency room treatment, and pass a lengthy written and practical examination given by the State Board of Examiners. The officers must prove to the examiners that they are capable of properly administering advanced medical attention by responding correctly to a wide scope of medical emergency scenarios.

In order for the officers to maintain their EMT certifications, they must attend several Continuing Education classes every two years and be re-certified in CPR. Several EMTs are certified CPR instructors and have been involved in the CPR re-certification of the Campus Police Officers, the Alumni Healthful Living Center Security Staff, the Student Patrol Division, and other college personnel. The lead EMT also oversees the use of the Department's Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Their EMT status further authorizes them to call "Life Flight" if necessary. Life Flight's emergency medical helicopter evacuation is in use in many areas of the United States. The officers' authority to call Life Flight is due to their EMT training in landing zone preparation which must be carefully executed to ensure the safety of everyone.

While not every medical emergency is life threatening, the potential for students, faculty, and staff members to become seriously ill or injured is always present. The Department of Public Safety has dedicated itself to providing the college community with the best emergency medical care possible.
