Parents
The CareerCenter supports the concept that by working together we can provide your student with the necessary tools to find their ultimate success and career. By developing a planned and systematic approach that fully involves the student, the parent, and the Career Center - from the college selection process through each academic year to graduation - satisfaction and dreams can be realized.
The Career Center advises students and provides resources on the types of planning and preparation necessary to help students meet their career goals. This includes internships, job seeking, labor market trends, individual career counseling, workshops, and employer contacts via career fairs, informational sessions, career events, and other on-campus events.
The role of the Career Center is to act as an educational agency, rather than an employment agency. We give students the tools, resources, and opportunities to find internships, plan for their career, make sound career decisions, obtain jobs. Ultimately the student is responsible for preparing for his or her career goals and for finding their position. Please explore our site to see what we offer.
Contact us at any time with questions or concerns. Please see our list of contacts for the most appropriate contact to assist you at CareerCenter - Welcome.

Information for Your Student
-
Choosing a Career/Choosing a Major
We work with students to choose an academic major that is compatible with individual interests and skills. This can be with students who are clear about a major and may need help in deciding a career, or assist those who may need help with choosing a major based on interests. You can also assist your student by reviewing some of the books listed under Recommended Reading for Parents and by continuing to partner with your student to support career exploration. -
GPA
Maintaining a good academic standing should be a priority with your student starting in the freshman year. It should be noted that some companies do use GPA as a cutoff in considering applicants. Other considerations may include background, experience, internships, and leadership skills to name a few. -
Getting Career Assessment
One-on-one career counseling is available as well as access to assessment tools; some of these are offered online and can be completed at the student’s convenience. Career counselors are available to assist in interpreting assessment results. -
Internships
We work with students to secure an internship position to gain experience based upon interest. This includes identification of sites, resume and interview preparation, and administrative paperwork necessary for academic credit. Internships for academic credit can be completed in most academic departments after the completion of 60 credit hours. Internships can be both paid and unpaid and are available for students to view in our online database which contains over 950 current internship opportunities. Many other opportunities are available through Internships-USA and other online sources. -
Leadership Activities
College is a great time for your student to gain leadership skills by working with clubs, organizations, and volunteer groups. Many employers consider leadership skills as important as GPA. Encourage your student to join an organization and take an active part. -
Taking Time Off
This is a decision that many students consider, however, taking time off may and does affect a student's employability. Many companies start new hires in training programs that start and end on a certain date, so your student may miss a start date and may have to wait until the next cycle, which could be one year away. Your student should be prepared to answer questions about experiences gained during the interim between graduation and the current job search. -
When should my student start using the Career Services Office?
We encourage students to start using the services offered by Career Services as soon as possible. There are many career planning sessions offered as well as individual career advising assistance. -
Experience
Experience can be gained by your students through campus organizations, campus activities, volunteer activities both on-campus and within the community, academic research, and leadership programs. The Office of Learning Beyond the Classroom and the Volunteer Connection Center offer other opportunities for students to both meet graduation requirements and serve the community. -
Planning for Graduate/Professional School
The decision to attend graduate school requires serious consideration. Any graduate school requires significant time, energy and money. The CareerCenter offers students help with writing personal statements, researching graduate programs, informational sessions about testing and admission requirements, and other requirements. It is advisable that this process start well before the senior year.
