Sport is a business, in fact it’s a $250 billion-a-year industry. Unlike other majors, our Sport Management major focuses on the business side of sport. It is designed on the idea that for sport organizations to be successful they need employees who have been trained specifically in the business of sport. You will learn the ins and outs of this exciting field from our talented faculty who have years of experience working in the sport industry.

Sport Management Curriculum

The Sport industry needs highly trained professionals with knowledge of all aspects of business operations. While some colleges align Sport Management majors with physical education, Western New England College emphasizes the business side of the field. In our leading-edge major, you will take a common core of business and liberal arts classes including:

  • accounting
  • business law
  • management
  • marketing

To expand your knowledge of the field, you will take exciting sport-specific courses such as:

  • Sport Marketing
  • Sport Facility Planning and Management
  • Sport Law
  • Economics of Sport

Learning beyond the classroom includes tours of sports facilities to see how things are managed behind the scenes. Students have traveled to:

  • Madison Square Garden
  • TD Banknorth Garden
  • MassMutual Center (located just a few miles from campus)
  • the Baseball Hall of Fame
  • the Basketball Hall of Fame (located just a few miles from campus)

You can also join the Student Sport Management Association that sponsors sport executive speakers, sport facility tours, and the Careers in Sports major.

Faculty

You'll be taught in small classes by experienced professors, not graduate students, who take a personal interest in your progress. Their prime focus is teaching and mentoring you, and our students find their teachers are always easy to approach and available for one-to-one consultation. A diverse group of professionals, our management faculty members hold advanced degrees in accredited business majors from some of the finest colleges and universities. All are involved in research, provide consulting to regional and national firms, publish in national journals, and present their work at regional and national meetings.

Sport Management majors can go on to work for professional sport franchises, college athletic programs, sport agencies, sport facilities, or sporting goods companies. Recent Western New England College graduates have been hired by:

Continue your Education with a Master’s Degree

The School of Business offers two paths of study to continue your education in the area of Sport Management.

Five-year Bachelor/MBA

This major offers an accelerated route to enhance your Sport Management degree with a traditional Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree, earning both degrees in just five years.

MBA Sport

Introduced in 2006, this part-time major for working professionals incorporates master’s-level business administration courses with sport-specific courses focusing on revenue development, sport law, finance, facilities planning, and customer service. You can take all classes online or mix and match online with on-campus study.

Internships and special opportunities

We have partnerships with sports organizations as well as our own Athletic Department. Our students gain hands-on experience in managing athletic events and tournaments, hosting sports professionals as speakers on campus, and participating in a variety of educational experiences both on and off-campus.

Our students have participated in the Walter Camp Fanfest, Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement, Volleyball Hall of Fame Induction, the College's Annual Athletic Golf Tournament, Division II Men's Basketball Championship, Midnight Madness, and a wide variety of other Sport Management experiences.

Our students also work closely with sports organizations through in-class assignments and project partnerships with sport organizations such as Dunham, World Wrestling Entertainment, Albany River Rats, WNBA and many others

Fields: Sports promotion, media and public relations, sport facility management, sales, and athletic director positions

Outlook: Business, marketing, and public relations continue to experience growth while various management and financial opportunities are also projected to increase in the next decade (U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-2009).
