They’ll go the distance for you

The faculty in the Western New England College School of Business goes the extra mile for students from the opening day of class until you cross the finish line at graduation. The Sport Management Department faculty brings sport industry experience to the classroom and students engage in real world projects with sport organizations.

Dr. Daniel Covell is an associate professor in the Sport Management Department. He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Sport Management. Dr. Covell has performed consulting work for the NCAA, Major League Baseball, and the Harvard University Athletic Department.

Curt Hamakawa, a 1984 graduate of the School of Law, returns to Western New England College as assistant professor of Sport Management after working for the United States Olympic Committee for the past 16 years. During his tenure at the USOC, Hamakawa held the positions of associate general counsel, director of athlete services, and most recently, director of international relations.

Dr. Sharianne Walker, chair of the Sport Management Department and associate professor of Sport Management, holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Sport Management. She has worked in marketing and public relations for the Boston Celtics and Commonwealth Sports Properties. Dr. Walker has also worked with a variety of sport-related agencies in the areas of fundraising, leadership, and revenue enhancement.

Our nationally recognized MBA faculty, who will teach the MBA Sport Management courses, bring the business world to the MBA classroom. Holding the highest degrees in their disciplines, they are actively engaged in advancing the field of business through research, consulting, and scholarship. This experience helps them bring a real-world perspective of the business world to you.

Courses designed to get you into the game

The topics covered in our MBA program mirror the challenges and realities of your daily business world. From case studies to simulations, team projects to consulting practicums, theory and practical application work hand-in-hand to give you the edge in the rapidly changing business environment.

In addition to the core MBA course requirements, the MBA Sport curriculum adds additional sport-specific courses to your education.

MAN 670 The Business of Sport explores the variety of sports segments that make up the sport industry and focuses on revenue development through innovation, partnerships, and market understanding. Both public and private revenue opportunities are explored.

MAN 671 Sport Law examines legal issues related to the management of sport organizations and their ability to identify and create new revenue opportunities. Contract development, negotiation, and labor principles are examined.

MAN 672 Sport Marketing studies strategic marketing in the sport business context, including theories and application of sport brand building, sport consumer behavior, sales, promotion, sport research, customer service, and relationship dimensions.

MAN 673 Sport Business Consulting/Internship Project provides students with the opportunity to gain in-depth hands-on experience in a sport organization. Students not currently working in the sport industry will complete an internship while those who hold positions in the sport industry will conduct a consulting project with a sport organization.

Sport electives include International Sport, Collegiate Athletics Management, or Facility Development.

The MBA Sport program allows you to formulate your own plan for completing coursework. You can take all courses online through the Manhattan virtual classroom or attend optional on-campus classes. Our innovative and flexible course delivery truly allows you to call the shots.

The Manhattan Virtual Classroom—Posting, Podcasting, and More!

The graduate business programs are delivered through “Manhattan,” the easy-to-use software developed at the College. Through the Manhattan Virtual Classroom, you can access and post assignments, view grades, and participate in chats with classmates or your professors. Faculty also post audio recordings of lectures via Podcasts so that you can listen to or review classes at your leisure.
