Department of Psychology

The Psychology Department focuses on helping students develop an appreciation for the scientific study of human behavior. Students enroll in a variety of courses designed to help them develop an understanding of the complex questions surrounding humans and animal behavior as well as the methods and techniques used by psychologists to answer these questions. Students take courses in introductory psychology, developmental psychology, learning, physiological psychology, research methods and statistics, and history of psychology as well as a variety of electives. Each course is designed to help students identify crucial questions about human behavior and to understand how psychologists attempt to develop experiments to answer those questions.

In addition to coursework, the Psychology Department believes that students should engage in the material in contexts outside the classroom. We encourage students to enroll in internships in the greater Springfield area that allow hands-on application of material learned in classes. Beyond internships, we also actively encourage students to engage in research with faculty members. For many years now, students have conducted research in several diverse areas of psychology, and presented that research at both regional and national conferences around the United States.

Psychology students are also involved in a number of organizations that promote the cause of psychology on our campus. Both the Psychology Club and Psi Chi (the National Honor Society of Psychology) plan a variety of activites designed to provide students with a better appreciation of the discipline. During the past year, Psychology students attended a variety of conferences, including APA, EPA, Neuroscience, BABAT, NASP, and Connecticut ABA.
