Department of English
The English major is one of the most versatile degrees in higher education because it prepares students to think and write clearly, and to read and speak effectively. Because these skills are seriously lacking in our society, our alumni are holding jobs not only in teaching, journalism, publishing, and law, but also in many different business firms.
The Department of English is entering a new phase in its development. During the past several years, we have substantively revised the curriculum to strengthen our students' verbal and cognitive skills, and we have hired new faculty with expertise in emerging areas of knowledge. We are particularly excited about our unique Master of Arts for Teachers degree that began in Spring 2003. It is the only MA program in the area that orients the curriculum to the practical and pedagogical needs of teachers. On the undergraduate level, while we continue to offer survey courses in the English and American traditions, we have also added courses on major authors, such as "Melville and Hawthorne" or "Jane Austen," to provide majors with both depth and breadth of background. We also offer a variety of courses which are particularly essential to English Majors: Literary Criticism (which is not given often to undergraduates), Modern Poetry, The English Language, World Literature, The English Seminar, Ethnic American Literature, etc. In summation, we believe we offer an exciting and reasonably comprehensive English major.
