The department of Communication is the home of the Communication major and minor.
In a fast changing world where people probably will change jobs and careers often during the course of their working lives, a major in Communication provides the basic skills needed for a wide variety of jobs and careers, and most importantly, skills in writing, speaking, and critical thinking. Students majoring in Communication at Western New England College take such courses as public speaking, mass communication, nonverbal communication, intercultural communication, and media planning and public relations. In addition, they can concentrate on electronic communication and journalism. The department offers many courses in electronic communication, such as television production, television broadcasting, and web page design. The College recently built a state-of-the-art television studio that will be used for hands-on instruction and broadcasting across campus. Numerous student audio-video projects are produced and showcased throughout the community.
The Communication program is fortunate to have a number of eminent part-time and full-time faculty. For example, the program boasts a nearly 15-year veteran news-anchor for the local Springfield affiliate of NBC, a nearly 30-year veteran editor of the largest circulation newspaper in Western Massachusetts, and a high administrator of the national Rwanda Radio network who is a survivor of the genocide that occurred in Rwanda in the early 1990’s.
