The department of Humanities is the home of the Philosophy major and minor, as well as the minors in African-American Studies, Fine Arts, and Spanish.
The Philosophy major provides knowledge and improves skills valuable to almost all employers, including reading, writing, analyzing, and thinking. It contributes to personal growth and a deeper understanding of ourselves, the world we live in, and other people. Students take courses in the history of philosophy, Eastern and Western Religions, ethics, and Social and Political Philosophy.
The Spanish minor continues to be very popular. (Since over 10 percent of the world's people speak Spanish, it is understandable why students in such varied majors as Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Psychology choose a Spanish minor.) The Department offers a range of courses, including Advanced Conversational Spanish, Literary Analysis in Spanish and a course in English translations entitled Love, Death, and Power in Twentieth Century Spanish American Literature.
Fine arts are blooming at Western New England College. The Campus Chorus has been growing by leaps and bounds, and not only has the quality of its performances reached new heights, but recently their concerts have filled the house! Other music performance groups, such as the jazz ensemble and pep band, are evolving and expanding. The Stageless Players, the student theater organization, continues to provide experience to budding actors, and new theater courses are being offered, including Acting I and II and an introduction to Improvisational Comedy. The Department also offers courses in studio art, such as drawing and painting, art history, film, such as The Haunted Screen, and music, such as Broadway Musicals and playing acoustic guitar.
