Don't Triple-Bogey and Miss Out on the 40th
Annual Alumni Golf Tournament: Register NOW

pregolf08.gifThis sure beats work on a Friday, and it’s for a great cause: student scholarships. The 40th Annual Alumni Golf Tournament will take place on May 23, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Golf Club, Agawam, MA. The cost is $130 per person, which includes golf, cart, lunch, and dinner. Meet us on the course at 10:00 a.m. for registration (11:00 a.m. shotgun start). Lunch will be served on the course from noon to 2:00 p.m. A dinner and prize ceremony will follow the tournament.

All of the proceeds gained through sponsorships, raffles, the silent auction, and donations benefit the Alumni Golf Scholarship Fund. The silent auction during the cocktail hour will include Red Sox Green Monster tickets! Moreover, there is a $20 discount for the Classes of ’02-’07, and strings are back by popular demand! For more information and to register, contact Kristina Oleksak at 413-782-1557. See the photo album/slide show of last year's tournament. (Read More)

Alumni Association Trips to Fenway Park: Twice
Again, it’s Time to Meet Up with the Boston Red Sox

pre_sox_08_copy.gifWhat summer would be complete without at least one pilgrimage to the baseball shrine known as Fenway Park? One of our favorite alumni events return in 2008, as the Alumni Association will make two trips to Boston to cheer on the world champion Red Sox.

The first game is on Sunday, June 22 (NOT July 22, as reported in the mail postcard) vs. the St. Louis Cardinals. The second game will take place on Saturday, Sept. 13 vs. the Toronto Blue Jays. Tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis. To purchase tickets for the July 22 game, call 1-866-567-4576 on Wednesday, May 21 between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. To purchase tickets for the September 13 game, call the same number on Wednesday, Aug. 13 during the same hours. The Alumni Association Community Service Day:
Giving the Children’s Study Home a Helping Hand

postcomserv80.gifThe gymnasium walls at the Children’s Study Home in Springfield had been looking more than a bit worn of late—until a team of alumni, staff, and students from Western New England College, armed with brushes and rollers, descended on the room on April 25 and spruced it up with a new coat of blue paint.

Volunteers taking part in the Alumni Association’s Community Service Day, including sophomore Kristi LaBare (pictured), also planted flowers on the lawn of this school, which is dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk children, youth, and families through educational, residential, and family services. See the photo album/slide show of this beautification project. (Read More)

The College Builds its First Dorm in ’65

[See our historic online photo archives.] David Kruger ’68/G'72 submitted this photo of the construction of South Hall (now Hampden Hall), the College's first dormitory, which opened on September 14, 1965. Its cost: $445,290! “This shift from an almost purely commuting institution to a residential college was a significant change in the direction of the College,” wrote President Beaumont Herman. Plans were also underway that year for the D.J. St Germain Campus Center, which opened in 1966. Kruger, the College’s vice president for finance and administration, was among the College’s first group of residential students, moving into South Hall in 1965, when there were a total of six buildings on campus. The Campus Center wasn’t completed until his second semester: all meals were prepared at American International College, transported down Wilbraham Road, and served in the basement of Churchill Hall, which was then the library. [See our historic online photo archives.] David Kruger ’68/G’72, a member of the Accounting Club as a student, stands proudly next to his organization’s snow sculpture during the Winter Carnival in 1967. The College's longtime vice president for finance and administration recently sent us several photos, including one of the future Mrs. Kruger (Gerri Corbett Kruger) aside the Pi Delta Kappa fraternity snow sculpture, and a shot of the contest winner: an impressive "Snoopy and the Red Baron" scene crafted by the Sigma Theta Chi fraternity.
