Teaching Excellence Award Nominations Due March 1

hamakawahakala2410gifDo you know a current member of the undergraduate faculty who best exemplifies excellence in teaching and campus leadership? Nominate him or her for the 2010 Teaching Excellence Award. Pictured are last year’s award recipients Curt Hamakawa L’83, an assistant professor of sport management, and Chris Hakala, an associate professor of psychology in the School of Arts and Sciences.

Nominations are due March 1. The award will be presented to this year’s recipient(s) at the Academic Honors Convocation on May 21. alumassoclogo10gifThe Alumni Association is seeking nominations to fill vacancies on its Board of Directors. The terms begin July 1, 2010. Offices up for election are Vice President, Alumni Outreach Committee Chair, Volunteer Management Committee Chair, and five Member-at-Large positions.

Nominations are also being sought for Alumni Awards, including 2009 Alumnus of the Year and the Alumni Association Service Awards. You may email nominations to alumwnec@wnec.edu. For Board positions please include a recent resume of the nominee, letter of intent, and a list of his or her volunteer activities and other accomplishments. You may also nominate yourself. Catch Falcons Fever: Alumni and Families are
Invited to a Fun Afternoon of Hockey March 28

falconandgirl09gifJoin fellow alumni for an afternoon of exciting American Hockey League action at the MassMutual Center on Sunday, March 28, as the Springfield Falcons host the Albany River Rats. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

Tickets cost $10. The pre-game reception, which will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., costs $5 per person (free for children under five). Get your picture taken with the Golden Bear and Screech, the Falcons’ mascot. There will also be crowd toss-outs by the Golden Bears hockey team, and appearances from the College's Choral Program and the ROTC National Guard. Bed Race Mystery Solved!

[View our online historic photo archives.] We were wondering who the students behind the makeup were—and what year the Kiss Army invaded the Bed Races—and we received an answer. Pictured at the 1997 Bed Races are (L-R) Chris Jacque ’95, Mike Brum, Rob Jacque ’99, Stephanie Faecher ’00, Kristin Pelletier Drapala ’00, and Becky Lauber Freitag ’99. “I actually did everyone’s makeup and costumes and helped build the bed,” writes Drapala, who is now an officer for the Middletown, CT Police Department. WNEK-FM raced this guitar-shaped bed during her sophomore year. The students in the picture built the contraption at Rob Jacque’s house with the help of Dan Bruno’97/G’01 and Paul Freitag ’99. Construction on the D’Amour Library in 1983


[View our online historic photo archives.] The construction on the new academic building prompted us to run a photo of the steel skeleton of the D’Amour Library. The finished product, of course, is diagonal to the foundation of the College’s latest building project. By 1982, the College had grown to such a degree that the library in Churchill Hall was constantly overloaded with students. Built at the cost of $4.5 million, the new library was dedicated on September 27, 1983. In the 26 years since that day, the building has changed dramatically. (Read More)
